TERROR ATTACK - MUMBAI 26 Nov '08

Mumbai, the financial capital of India was attacked on the 26th NOV by 10 – 15 suspected Pakistani terrorists and still it had not been overcome by 29 November. Targets were innocent people and tourists. Terrorists occupied the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower near the Gateway of India, the Oberoi Trident at Nariman Point and the Nariman House Jewish center (Where Israeli Rabbi and his wife stay) At least 160 people including at least twenty-two foreign nationals have been confirmed dead, and at least 327 have been injured.

The operation of rescuing people from these terrorist was the most dangerous task. The NSG – National Security Guards, the Army, the Air force and the Navy battled for over 48 hours before they could kill these terrorists and take control of these 3 places. A previously unknown organization identifying itself as the Deccan Mujahideen claimed responsibility by email sent to news organizations. Prime Minister Man mohan Singh has said the attacks probably had “external linkages,” believing that the attack could not have occurred without help. After two days of gunfire and explosions, the attack had ceased as of the early morning of 28 November in Mumbai. The fires were out and soldiers were leading hostages and guests to safety and removing bodies of those killed in the attacks. Both hotels occupied by terrorists were cleared and the terrorists were flushed out. Indian commandos – NSG stormed the Jewish center where the terrorists had held at least ten hostages. Five hostages were killed at the Jewish center.

In between all these, the political parties are blaming each other for the lapse of security, come on I really don’t know why people play the blame game rather than trying to analyse who is behind this and take them to task. Dirty politics as usual.
Sincere condolence to families who lost their dear ones.

R A N D O M T H O U G H T S

Ahh... It’s been a while since I got to write something. Been busy with gym, yoga and work. Right now I am not keeping well, just a lil fever and soar throat.

How I fell sick? Day before when I drank water at office, I knew straight away there is something wrong with it and felt I will fall sick. And presto within 5 minutes my throat went soar. It’s weird how at times you get to feel something the very moment you are on it. I didn’t go to the doctor. I generally don’t like medicine rather the whole look or atmosphere of a clinic or a hospital. I feel myself miserable and helpless when I am at a hospital. I really don’t like it.

Thinking of hospital, yesterday my DGM’s – Prashanth’s father passed away, he was sick for sometime now. May he rest in peace. So, I was at the hospital to take care of few things as Prashanth was away on a business trip to US, he has headed home now.

Missed my gym yesterday, planning to go out today so I might feel better. Will try and get back more frequently to write here.

F A C T S O F L I F E

Came across this read on facebook, please read through.

Some facts

While 100 million tons of grain are being diverted to make fuel this year, over seven times as much (760 million tons) will be used to feed animals. The world's passion for meat is a much bigger cause of global hunger than its passion for the car.

To maximise food production it is best to be vegan. According to Simon Fairlie, in his magazine The Land, it would take just 3 million hectares of arable land to meet Britain's food needs, half the current total, if the population were vegan.

* To produce 1 lb of meat, an average of 40 lbs of vegetation is used.
* 12 lbs of wheat produce 12 loaves of bread and only 1hamburger.
* It takes 3.25 acres of land to produce food for a meat eater on a continuing basis, while it takes 1/3 of an acre for someone eating a diet of plants and dairy and 1/6 of an acre for a person eating totally plant based diet (vegan).
* A University of California Study shows that to produce 1 lb of meat it takes an average of 2,500 gallons of water, it takes 966 gallons of water to produce one gallon of cow's milk and on the other hand plant foods such as wheat, corn, apples etc. take 20 to 50 gallons of water to produce one pound of food.
* Eating food crops first hand produces a tremendous energy savings. To produce one pound of protein derived from beef requires 20 times as much fossil fuel energy as the same one pound of protein derived from corn or wheat. Protein from beef requires 40 times more fossil fuel energy than the same amount of protein derived from soybeans.
* The waste released in the atmosphere by the U.S. Meat and Dairy Industry is 230,000 pounds per second, thus polluting earth, air and water systems.
* It is estimated that it takes 75,000 trees to print a Sunday edition of The New York Times for the readers. These staggering numbers are a wake up-call for us to make a difference now.Human Welfare
* Twenty vegetarians can be fed on the amount of land needed to feed one person consuming a meat-based diet.
* If America reduced their intake of meat by 10 percent, 60 million people can be adequately fed by grain saved.
* A cow has to eat 7 lbs of grain and soy bean protein to produce 1 lb of meat protein. If the same land were to produce food for humans directly, 7 times more people could eat.
* More than half of all the water used in the United States is used in live stock production that can be used where there is water shortage.

When we become aware of these facts and change our lifestyle and go vegan we can increase the amount of grain available to feed people elsewhere, reduce pollution, save water and energy, cease contributing to the clearing of forests and the most important we can save billions of sentient beings from torture and pain.

Today the dairy cows have become milking machines for human beings. The cows are kept pregnant every year for a consecutive 9-10 year period by artificial insemination. As soon as the cows stop yielding milk, they are dragged to the slaughter house for beef meat. Poor calves are forcefully dragged away from their mothers, depriving them of their mother's milk that is rightfully theirs. If the calves are female they are raised as dairy cows and are exploited as their mothers and at the end face the same fate as them. If the calves are male they are fattened by hormone injections and kept in dark sheds away from sunlight in oppressed conditions, preparing them for veal meat. This ultimately ends the lives of the cows and calves prematurely and cruelly.

B E T T E R - L I F E

It’s been close to a week since I smoked or had a drink and it feels just great. Yes, I mean I quit smoking and drinking... Ohhhhhahhhhha... I am so sorry for the tobacco companies, one person down in contributing to their gross margins...hehehe...

Anyways, started hitting the gym from the past 3 days, man I missed the gym. I am going on a liquid diet from today for the next 2 weeks (Liquid diet = not beer and alcohol J instead fruit, vegetable juice, Milk shakes and of course water). It’s just that my body needs a cleansing and this would be the best way to get all the toxins out. I hope to extend the liquid diet if my body permits.

Many are rubbing their eyes across the globe with disbelief that Obama has been elected as the New American President.

All the very best to the american people and the rest of the world for a new leader has been elected to the most sought after office seat in the world.

Hope we see some electrifying difference in the making by Obama to the people and the rest of the world.

All the very best Mr. President

E N N O B L I N G - M O M E N T S

Finally the long awaited United States elections are up today. The 2 leading men, Barack Hussein Obama and John McCain are in the race to the president. The whole world is anxious to know the results, yes in today’s world where the global economy is so much dependent on the US. This election is going to be pleasing change from the Bush Administration. Everyone has seen what’s happened in the last 10 years since Bush is in the office. Everyone wants an inevitable change. With the news in papers and some very well know friends of mine in the US, it seems Obama has a better chances of winning. Obama leads McCain in all opinion polls, making everyone believe that his win is imminent.

Election in the US is not a holiday though; people are expected to cast their votes before or after their work. Though the system used doesn’t seem to be a perfect election, much less a perfect democracy, there seems to be a lot of bugs and flubs and such scattershot voting procedures, every one seems to be unsure on the other side. Obama is moving inexorably towards the capital from Florida through North Carolina and Virginia while McCain seems to be eyeing for Florida to Tennessee to Pennsylvania to Indiana to New Mexico.

What’s the world got to do with the US election, just look at the 2 presidential candidate’s things to do once they get elected.

Barack Hussein Obama

1. Has said he back the N-Deal but may reinforce non-proliferation rules that could resist transfer of technology and fuel to India under pressure.
2. Wants an end to terrorism in Pakistan’s Al-Qaida sanctuaries, favours to bring back more US troops back from Afghanistan and more training of Afghan soldiers, but not much clarity on the policy
3. Stronger opposition on Taliban
4. Taxes to be increased for companies which are outsourcing their businesses and slash income tax for middle class
5. Wants to increase capital gain tax
6. Wants to withdraw troops from Iraq
7. Wants to increase ethanol and other bio fuel subsidies and 80% cut in emissions by 2050

John McCain

1. Likes to be good for India since he would keep the commitments Bush made in the N-Deal
2. Continue on Bush Policy on Pakistan and Afghanistan
3. Favours increased troops in Afghanistan
4. Would continue Bush’s hard line on war against terror
5. Slash corporate taxes and give break to middle and rich class people
6. Doesn’t want to pull troops from Iraq
7. Opposes ethanol subsidy, wants to increase nuclear power in next 20 years and cut emissions by 2040.

So, with the above, I am not sure it would be much of a change with McCain back elected to office, but having Obama into office would surely make history and a new beginning.
Let’s wait and watch.

Today’s question

"Who do you think will win the US elections, Obama or McCain?"

ART OF LIVING

Finally, I am back from my Art of Living 3 day course. It was a pleasant, surprising experience to find so much about myself through these classes. We at times, no... most of the times forget who we are and try to be someone else and completely ignore about our own selves.
So much to learn and so much of my life’s time wasted. I would have explained in detail about my experience, but it wouldn’t be fair on me nor AOL. You need to experience AOL in person to understand what I mean?

AOL experience for me was excellent and mind opening from my lost path of life. It’s not only made me realise how important my life is, not only to me but to the people around me. With that I rest my writing about AOL.

AOL course is in over 150 countries. Contact me if you need any guidance on how you can attend the AOL course.
